Another Best Nursing Story: Him and Her

Now Mr. Tegg and Mrs. Snow were not married but they did spend every minute they could together under lock down. Mrs. Snow was very quiet and soft spoken, she has had a hard life. She lost her daughter to suicide not six months before covid hit. Her diagnosis’ made her have a lack of emotions. And she was very disinterested in social interactions. She was very distant and you could feel it the minute you walked into her room. Mr. Tegg was very social and couldn’t stand being in his room. He was very loud and a true southern white man. I would tell him, ‘You will argue with a fence post’.

When Covid Hit:

The man refused to follow any of the rules that the CDC laid out. “This is just a big hoax”, he would say. Now our building was a smoking facility. Which means we would let the smokers go out and smoke at certain times. And the cigarettes and lighters were locked up until these breaks. Mr. Tegg felt that these times did not apply to him and would wait till I was away from my desk to sneak by me to go outside to our courtyard to have his fix. If I caught him in the act he would curse me out and tell me what a terrible nurse I am.

This morning was the same. He had snuck out of his room and she did also. I knew they were out in the court yard, I didn’t say anything this time. Honestly, I was too tired to argue and two they looked so happy together. I couldn’t pull them apart.

The next night that, I worked he was my patient and he slept well until around five A.M. when he woke up mad as hell. He was cursing at everyone. I went down to his room and when I walked in he just started saying what a terrible nurse I was. I tried to find out why he was so mad. But as he was cursing me out when he turned white, fell back into his bed, and coded. I called for help, started CPR, and using my phone called 911. When the paramedics got there they worked on him for over an hour. But no use he was gone. I just thought to my self: who was gonna tell Mrs. Snow?
